General Focus: Co-Regulation (Applicable to All Crises)
This is a two-step tool for parents to use in any high-stress, crisis-related moment when their child (or they themselves) are losing control. (Based on the “Reset Button” concept from Module 3).
The Challenge: A crisis moment has escalated. The child is crying, yelling, or refusing to talk about the separation/loss/new rules. Your fuse is short.
| Step 1: Parent Regulation (The Anchor’s Pause) | Action |
| The STOP Signal: What is your physical cue that you are getting overwhelmed? (e.g., jaw clenches, shoulders tense). | 🛑 My Signal: |
| The Power of 3: What is the single, simple action you will take to reset your body before speaking? (e.g., 3 deep breaths, count to 5, leave the room for 1 minute). | 💨 My Pause: |
| The Anchor’s Mantra: What is the calm, single-sentence reminder you will repeat internally? (e.g., “I am safe. They are safe. We are connected.”) | 🧘 My Mantra: |
| Step 2: Child Co-Regulation (The Playful Reset) | Playful Action |
| Tension Release: What quick, silly action will you use to break the child’s pattern of distress and release tension? (This must be physical and fun). | 🤸 Action: (e.g., Initiate a surprise tickle monster attack, “I need a giant hug and a silly noise!”, or put a pillow over your head and pretend you can’t see them). |
| The Connection Bridge: Once the tension is broken, what is the final, connecting step before you try to talk? (Do not discuss the problem yet). | ❤️ Connection: (e.g., Read a favorite book, say “I love you. Let’s try again in 5 minutes,” or offer a warm drink). |
