Purpose: This exercise helps you see your child through the lens of their passions and strengths, inspired by the “Ikigai” video. Instead of focusing on what needs to be fixed, this is about noticing and nurturing the spark that is already there.
Instructions: Over the next week, become a “spark detective.” Pay attention to your child during playtime, conversations, and even moments of quiet focus. Use the prompts below to jot down your observations. There are no right or wrong answers!
1. What do they LOVE doing? (Passion)
(What activities make their eyes light up? What do they talk about nonstop? When do they seem most joyful and engaged?)
2. What are they GOOD at? (Skills)
(This isn’t just about school subjects! Are they a great storyteller? A creative builder? Empathetic with friends or pets? A fast runner? A keen observer?)
3. What makes them feel HELPFUL or NEEDED? (Contribution)
(When do they seem proud of themselves for helping? Do they love to teach a younger sibling something? Do they take pride in a specific chore or family role?)
Reflection Question:
Looking at your notes, is there a connection between these areas? How could you create more opportunities for your child to be in their “spark zone” this week?
