Module 6 – Worksheet 2: Decoding Our Homework Trap: A Pattern-Spotting Guide
Purpose: This worksheet helps you identify which of the “homework traps” from the article “Beyond Homework Battles” might be active in your family and brainstorm collaborative solutions with your child.
Instructions: Read the descriptions of the three common traps. Which one feels most familiar to you right now?
The Three Traps:
- Trap 1: The Quick-Fix Cycle. (Do you find yourself giving the answers, doing parts of the homework for them, or relying on a tutor just to get through the assignment, even if you know they don’t fully understand the material?)
- Trap 2: The Power Struggle Spiral. (Does homework time quickly escalate into a battle of wills, with nagging, resistance, and frustration on both sides, where the original goal of learning is lost?)
- Trap 3: The “Good At/Bad At” Divide. (Has your child decided they are “bad” at a certain subject and now avoids it at all costs, while pouring all their energy into the subjects where they feel successful?)

- Parent: “I’ve noticed that when it’s time for [subject], we both end up feeling [frustrated/angry/sad]. That’s not what I want for us. I wonder if we could try something different.”
- Ask Your Child: “What is the most frustrating part about [subject] for you?”
- Brainstorm Together: “What is one small, playful thing we could try this week to make it feel a little bit better?
(Ideas: We could turn it into a game, do it in a different room, put on some music, break it into tiny 5-minute chunks with silly breaks in between?)
