But as parents, we also know it presents significant risks. Now that we have a more empathetic view, let’s turn to our most important role: keeping them safe.

The internet offers incredible opportunities for learning, connection, and entertainment, but it also presents significant risks for children. Ensuring online safety is paramount for parents to help their children navigate the digital world responsibly and securely.

Why Online Safety is Important

Children, with their natural curiosity and desire for independence, are uniquely vulnerable to online threats. The consequences of these threats can be severe and long-lasting, impacting a child’s emotional well-being, mental health, and even physical safety.

Key reasons why online safety is crucial:

Cyberbullying and Online Harassment: Children can be exposed to mean, aggressive, or rude texts, posts, or messages, as well as the sharing of personal information or images without consent. This can severely impact a child’s emotional well-being, leading to anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep.
Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Children may accidentally or deliberately encounter sexually explicit material, false or misleading information, content depicting violence, extremism, or hate speech. Such exposure can harm a child’s mental health and emotional and moral development.
Online Grooming: This manipulative process involves an individual building trust with a child online with the intent of exploitation, often for illegal or harmful purposes like sexual exploitation. Grooming can occur on social media, messaging apps, and online games.
Phishing, Scams, and Malware: Children can be targets of fraudulent schemes designed to deceive them for financial gain or to steal personal data. This includes impersonation, fake giveaways, online shopping scams, and phishing attempts that can lead to financial loss, compromised devices, and identity theft. Malware can also be used to steal data or damage devices.
Privacy and Data Risks: Children may inadvertently share sensitive information, making them vulnerable to identity theft or misuse of their data. Tech companies can also breach privacy to collect data for marketing, potentially compromising a child’s healthy development.
Recruitment by Extremist Groups and Human Trafficking: Digital platforms are used by extremist groups to recruit young internet users. Human traffickers also use online platforms to recruit victims, often preying on children and teenagers seeking acceptance or friendship.

How to Increase Online Safety

Increasing online safety is an ongoing journey that requires a combination of open communication, clear rules, and the use of protective technologies.

Here are key strategies for parents:

Be Engaged, Open, and Supportive: Get involved in your child’s online activities. Play games together, talk about their favorite apps and websites, and keep lines of communication open. Reassure your child that they can always come to you, no matter what, without fear of losing internet access. If you notice changes in behavior or mood, talk with them.

Set Clear Ground Rules and Boundaries: Establish rules for device and online access, including consequences for breaking them. Involve your child in creating a “family tech agreement” or “family media plan” to help them understand the risks and take ownership of their online behavior.

Model Healthy Technology Habits: Children often mimic their parents’ behavior. Reduce your own screen time, avoid screens during meals, and explain what you are doing when using devices in front of your children. Put your phone away when your child is trying to speak to you.
