
The previous video powerfully illustrates how the self is born from action. But what is the science behind this? How does the brain build this map of the “self” in the first place? Our next article will dive deeper into the neuroscience of body schema and body image.
As we saw in the video, the experience of “self” begins with the body. To truly understand how to nurture our children’s self-esteem, we must first appreciate the two complementary pillars that govern how humans experience their physical selves: body schema and body image. These internal systems evolve continuously through a complex interaction between the brain, the body, and the social environment, starting from a baby’s first touch (Suhajda, n.d.-a).
Neuroscience describes body schema as the brain’s dynamic, sensorimotor map that automatically integrates information from sight, touch, movement (proprioception), and balance to control our posture and actions (Lunetta et al., 2023). This system is almost entirely unconscious. You do not need to consciously calculate where your feet are to walk down a staircase; your brain just knows. This internal map allows us to interact fluently with our environment. The body schema is what supports a child learning to ride a bicycle or an adult navigating a crowded room—these skills, once learned, become stored as coordinated, embodied motor patterns.
This internal map is not static; it is constantly being updated. When a baby successfully reaches for and grasps a toy, their brain instantly merges visual cues (“there is the toy”) with proprioceptive feedback (“this is how my arm feels when it moves this way”) to update the map. Research in clinical neuropsychology shows that this processing involves a dynamic network of brain regions, including the somatosensory cortex, posterior parietal cortex, and premotor areas (Lunetta et al., 2023). When these circuits are disturbed, either through injury or in certain developmental disorders, it can distort a person’s perception of movement and their ability to control their own body.
In contrast, body image is the conscious picture and, critically, the feeling we have about our bodies—how they look, feel, and function. Lunetta et al. (2023) distinguish body image as a complex construct involving several components: a perceptual component (how you “see” your body in your mind’s eye), an emotional component (the feelings you have about your body, such as pride, satisfaction, or shame), a cognitive component (the thoughts and beliefs you hold about your body), and a social component (how you imagine others perceive you).
While the two are deeply interconnected, they are not the same. A person with a perfectly functional body schema can have a deeply negative body image. The body schema is the physical foundation (“I can move, I can reach”), while the body image is the emotional and psychological house built on top of it (“How do I feel about the ‘me’ that is doing the moving?”). A healthy body schema, built through rich, embodied play in childhood, provides a stable foundation. However, a healthy body image requires a different kind of nutrient: one of psychological safety, acceptance, and connection.
We now have a clear scientific understanding of the two “bodies” we all have: the unconscious body schema that acts, and the conscious body image that feels. But how does this relate to play?
